ASUS X44H-VX026V Max Performance Laptop

ASUS X44H-VX026V - good specs on basic notebook with above-average portability

The deal: ASUS X44H-VX026V - good specs on basic notebook with above-average portability - $494.00

Added 20 December 2011
For $494 at the Good Guys the 14in ASUS X44H-VX026V is a good-value basic notebook that has slightly enhanced portability over its more expensive brethren. A 2nd Gen Intel Core i3 and 4GB of RAM provide enough computing power to multi-task fluidly, so despite the low price it’s powerful enough to stay useful for a while.

Processor
The X44H features a 2nd Gen Intel Core i3-2310M (2.1GHz), a fast low-end processor which can smoothly run productivity applications and some intensive software.

Graphics
The X44H includes an integrated graphics solution called Intel HD Graphics 3000. It’s on par with a low-end dedicated graphics card, and is sufficient for modern games at the lowest settings.

RAM
The X44H comes with 4GB of RAM, which is enough to run several programs at once smoothly.

Storage
The X44H has a 500GB hard disk drive, which is large enough to store important files along with a core collection of media content.

Screen
The X44H sports a 14in (1,366 x 768 resolution) glossy screen. The gloss screen does make outdoor usage a bit of a struggle, but stay out of direct sunlight and it’s still fine.

Portability
The X44H is more portable than your average notebook, because it weighs 2.44kg and measures 36.9mm thick. Carrying it around won't pose any difficulties.

Motorola Droid Xyboard 10.1 (32GB) - CNET

The good: The Motorola Droid Xyboard 10.1 feels like an amalgamation of all our favorite Android tablets of 2011 and is endowed with 4G LTE compatibility from Verizon.
The bad: The on-contract price will make you cry, the off-contract price will make you laugh.
The bottom line: The Motorola Droid Xyboard 10.1 is a premium Android tablet from the company that defined the category, held back by a high price and uninspired design.

MSRP:$629.99
See manufacturer website for availability.
Set price alert
Motorola kicked off 2011 with the world's first Android 3.0 (Honeycomb) tablet, the Motorola Xoom. In its wake we witnessed a flood of imitators, and eventually a handful of thinner, brighter, more innovative tablets.
With the Xyboard 10.1 and its smaller sibling, the Xyboard 8.2, Motorola is revisiting the same formula it used for the original Motorola Xoom. By combining high-end hardware with Google's latest tablet-optimized Honeycomb software and Verizon's high-speed mobile network, Motorola could have another hit on its hands.
But will Motorola's recipe for success still work in a time when $199 tablets dominate the headlines and the market is flush with contract-free Honeycomb options? Let's take a look.
Pricing and models
The Motorola Xyboard is an expensive tablet. Purchased through Verizon, the Xyboard is available for $529 (16GB), $629 (32GB), and $729 (64GB), with a two-year commitment to a 4G data plan. These plans start at $30 for 2GB of monthly data. Over the course of two years, the cost of the data plan adds up to $720 plus applicable fees (such as a $35 activation charge). If you try to bail before your contract is up, the early termination fee is up to $350.
If you go with a pay-as-you-go plan, like the iPad's, you'll pay an extra $170 for the device, making it $699 for the lowest-cost 16GB model.
To save some money, you could go with Motorola's smaller Xyboard 8.2, which starts at $430 with a two-year contract. Unfortunately, Verizon's terms and fees are no less onerous.
And what do you get for the money? Well, the Xyboard isn't the fastest tablet we've seen, nor the thinnest, the lightest, the brightest, or the longest-lasting. Arguably, the best thing the Droid Xyboard has going for it (aside from its catchy name) is Verizon's 4G network compatibility. If you feel the need for mobile speed, and you have the money to support your habit, then by all means indulge yourself.
Design
The first thing you're bound to notice about the Xyboard is its clipped-off corners, which give it a more octagonal look. It's a subtle thing, but it does help to distinguish it from the sea of rectangles floating out there.
Like most tablets running Android 3.0 and up, the Xyboard keeps all of its navigation on its 10.1-inch screen, leaving the bezel free from any buttons. Above the screen you'll find a Motorola logo off to one side and a 1.3-megapixel camera in the center.
Flip the Xyboard over on its belly and you'll find a 5-megapixel camera with an LED flash. Both of the Xyboard's cameras are capable of recording 720p video. Two integrated speakers are also on the back, along with power and volume buttons and a door concealing the tablet's SIM card and microSD memory slot.
The top edge of the Xyboard holds a 3.5mm headphone jack and a Tic Tac-sized window for the built-in IR blaster, which enables the tablet to act as a remote control. On the opposite end you'll find a Micro-USB port for charging and syncing, as well as a Micro-HDMI port for mirroring content on your TV. A charging adapter is included with the Xyboard, but the device is capable of charging (very slowly) over a USB connection to your computer.

Overall, the Xyboard 10.1's design feels solid and thoughtful, with echoes of the Motorola Xoom. Hopefully this time around Motorola will have more than a month of sales under its belt before another tablet steps in with a radical new trendsetting design. Then again, with theConsumer Electronics Show 2012 coming less than a month after the release of the Xyboard, it could be that the Xyboard is cursed to repeat the Xoom's fate. At least this time around, the4G comes baked in.
Hardware specs
Inside the Xyboard 10.1 Motorola is using a 1.2GHz dual core processor from Texas Instruments, backed with a full gigabyte of system RAM. On paper, this sounds like an improvement over the 1GHz dual-core Nvidia Tegra 2 processors used in most Honeycomb tablets, but I really didn't feel the difference in terms of navigation or overall system responsiveness. In fact, I encountered a handful of surprising application hang-ups, but these things typically get ironed out with software updates.
It's also worth noting that the Xyboard's hardware configuration will be eligible for an Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) update in the future. Considering Google's stake in Motorola, one would hope that the software update will be fast-tracked.
Beyond processing, all of the expected premium capabilities are here, including assisted GPS, digital compass, Bluetooth 2.1+EDR, 802.11 a/b/g/n, and even digital pen support.
Software
Motorola also throws everything in when it comes to software. Business-minded users will appreciate the preinstalled apps for Citrix, Fuze Meeting, GoToMeeting, Polycom, and Quickoffice HD. The fun-loving will be happy to see Netflix, Blockbuster, Slingbox, and Madden NFL 12.
Fortunately, Motorola and Verizon have done little to obscure the pure Android 3.2 experience. The only branded software on the home screen is MotoCast, an app that enables you to stream or download media to your tablet over the air from your home computer. Verizon's app store and navigation software also come included, but are easy enough to ignore.

Asus U44SG Rocks Nvidia 610M Graphics Netbook Live Compact Computers

Asus’s U44SG is a new arrival from CES and it’s one of the laptops the company is aiming at gamers as well, looking for a truly portable, but capable computer for gaming on the go. The unit we caught was running Portal 2- and doing it quite well, if you ask me.

With detail levels on high (I suppose) the gameplay was smooth, so I guess anything close to Portal 2 in terms of system requirements should  run just as smooth as this.

The 14 inch U44SG can be equipped with Sandy Bridge processors, ranging from Core i3-2310M to the no nonsense Core i7-2640M. The laptop can take in as much as 8 GB of DDR3 RAM, while for storage you can go as far as 750 GB of mechanical storage or 320 GB of fast SSD storage.

The U44SG comes of course with Intel HD 3000 integrated graphics, but can be equipped with Nvidia’s 610M video card as well, that comes with 1 GB of dedicated memory. If you want to switch between the two and save up battery life, you can do so by using the Optimus Technology, which won’t require for you to restart the computer in the process.

As for battery life, Asus claims that you can get as much as 10 hours of autonomy, but that will probably happen only if you skip gaming, as using the video card and pumping up the processor will drain the juice maker much faster.

The display has a standard resolution of 1366 x 768 and seems to be quite glossy from what I’ve seen in the video, but glossier means brighter, which might pay off in dark room gaming. As for ports, you get all the usual, like USB 2.0 and 3.0 and HDMI, and Asus also treats us with Altec Lansing sound, hopefully better than the one they had on previous laptops in 2011.

That’s all for now, but don’t forget to check our hands on video with the U44SG straight from CES 2012. Enjoy.

ASUS CM1740-US-2AG Desktop Repair Guide

What you can get for $500 keeps getting better and better every year and the ASUS CM1740-US-2AG is certainly a nice step up from the model just six months ago.

This is a good all around system thanks to its quad core AMD processor, 8GB of memory, dedicated graphics and wireless networking.

It may not be as fast as an Intel based desktop at this price range but it still provides more than enough for the average user.

The one downside is that the power supply does limit the potential to upgrade the graphics even further for those looking to get a low cost gaming setup.

Pros

Dedicated Graphics Card
8GB Memory
Wireless Networking

Cons

Processor Slower Than Many Dual Core Intel Based Systems
Low Wattage Power Supply Limits Graphics Upgrades

Review - ASUS CM1740-US-2AG

Aug 20 2012 - The ASUS CM1740-US-2AG is extremely similar to the CM1720-US-2AF that I reviewed six months ago. It uses the same base components with a few minor upgrades. The processor has been upgraded from the AMD Fusion A6-3620 quad core processor to a slightly faster A8-3820 quad core processor.

In addition to the processor, the memory was upgraded for 4 to 8GB of DDR3. This is one of the largest capacities you will see in this price range and provides it with the extra boost it needs for dealing with multiasking which is one of the key benefits from the four cores. There are even four memory slots so the RAM can be upgraded further if needed. It should be noted though that in many tasks, the A8 processors still falls behind many of the Intel dual-core processors. Still, for the average user, this should provide it with more than enough performance for the web browsing, media viewing and productivity software.

Storage features for the ASUS CM1740-US-2AG remain unchanged from the 2AF model I looked at six months ago. It features a one terabyte hard drive that provides it with a large amount of space for applications, data and media files. This is typical now for most desktop in this price range. The drive does spin at the full 7200rpm spin rate which does give it a slight speed advantage over those that use the green class drives. If you need addition space, there are two USB 3.0 ports available for use with high speed external hard drives. This was pretty unique six months ago but many more computers now features these ports. A standard dual layer DVD burner is included for playback and recording for CD or DVD media.

The big difference between this system and the last model I reviewed is the graphics system. The AMD A8 processor does feature an integrated Radeon HD 6550D which is a very good system that offers some decent 3D performance and a step up from what the A6 had. What ASUS has done though is include a dedicated AMD Radeon HD 7470 graphics card. This is still a relatively low end graphics card that won't do much beyond basic 3D but it does have the ability to run in a CrossFire setup with the internal graphics to offer even better 3D performance.

Now, it isn't going to be as good as a midrange card and it does have its quirk in certain programs. This also offers improved acceleration for non-3D applications which is becoming more useful. The graphics card can be swapped out for a higher model but it is still restricted by the relatively low 300 watt power supply.

For those that already have a wireless network setup in their home for use with mobile devices, the CM1740-US-2AG does come with a 802.11b/g/n wireless networking adapter. This makes it easy to setup the system without needing to stretch an ethernet cable between the desktop and your broadband connection.

In terms of the competition for ASUS, the closest desktop system in the $500 price range would be the Acer Aspire AM3450-UR10P. That system offers an eight core processor for additional performance but comes with less memory. While it also features a dedicated graphics card, it falls short of this ASUS system with its newer 7000 series card and the ability to work with the integrated graphics core.
